On a side note, my neighbor Jocelyn's husband planted a Champion Red Oak tree years and years ago. It was a slow grower and it always drops it's leaves first (yes in August) and gets it's leaves last in the Spring. They have a beautiful yard with lots of pretty oak trees. My good friend Calvin passed away quite a few years back now but I'm always reminded of him when "his tree" as he called it starts dropping it's leaves. It brings a smile to my face and I feel he's looking down on us with a smile.
Earlier this month, we started the process of making pickles for our Fall bazaar at church. My Ruth Circle friends and I meet at Pauline's house twice every August. The first meeting is a Saturday morning and we mix the pickles in a huge crock with all the good ingredients that make up these "hot selling pickles" also known as Hot Pickles. They have tons of garlic and tabasco sauce and lots of sugar. Pauline stirs the concoction for the next 5 days and then we meet again that next Thursday to do the canning process. Our next meeting is in September and we'll decorate the jars with labels and cute fabric tops to make them look real "country-like!" We canned 64 jars and they will sell like hot-cakes at our bazaar. We have many many return customers that buy these up knowing they can't get more until the next year's bazaar! :) Our bazaar is in October every year and even though August is brutal, making pickles is a SIGN that FALL is around the corner!
